Mesa Officer Involved Shooting During Arrest of Domestic Violence Suspect

CHANDLER, Ariz. — Mesa Police detectives were involved in an officer-involved shooting Tuesday afternoon while attempting to arrest a domestic violence suspect at a residence in Chandler.

Just before 3:45 p.m. on September 1, Mesa Police detectives responded to a residence in the area of Frye Road and Kingston Street in Chandler. Detectives had established probable cause to arrest an adult male suspect in connection with a domestic violence incident that occurred earlier in the week in Mesa.

Detectives had information confirming the suspect was inside the Chandler residence and began communicating with him, giving him instructions to surrender.

During the communication, the suspect told detectives he was armed with a rifle. The suspect was subsequently observed at the rear of the residence holding a rifle, at which point an officer-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect refused officers' commands to surrender before retreating back into the residence and barricading himself inside.

Officers then utilized several less-lethal options in an effort to safely take the suspect into custody. The suspect was eventually taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Mesa Police identified the incident under report number 2026-201623. Chandler Police documented the incident under report number 26-103577.

The investigation remains ongoing. Further details regarding the circumstances of the shooting and the suspect's condition were not immediately released.
