A late-night confrontation outside a Mesa reception hall ended in gunfire early Saturday morning, leaving two people injured after an armed juvenile allegedly opened fire on a security guard and an off-duty Mesa Police officer became involved in the shooting.

According to the Mesa Police Department, the incident occurred at approximately 1:05 a.m. on October 10, 2026, outside Versalles Reception Hall near Main Street and Lazona Drive in Mesa, where a private event was taking place.

Both injured individuals were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Mesa Police say the incident began when a juvenile male attempted to enter the reception hall but was denied entry.

Investigators say the juvenile then pulled out a handgun, pointed it at a security guard, and fired at him.

Following the initial gunfire, the juvenile reportedly ran toward a nearby vehicle.

Police say the security guard and an off-duty Mesa Police officer followed the juvenile and both discharged their firearms at him.

The juvenile then fled south across Main Street.

As the juvenile crossed Main Street, an on-duty Mesa Police patrol officer encountered him.

According to investigators, the juvenile removed a handgun and threw it onto the ground before being taken into custody without further incident.

Police say the juvenile suffered apparent gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

An adult male who was inside a vehicle associated with the juvenile was also struck by gunfire. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Neither the off-duty Mesa Police officer nor the security guard was injured. Authorities also reported no injuries to bystanders.

Scottsdale Police Leading Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation

The Scottsdale Police Department is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team (EVCIRT).

EVCIRT is a multi-agency partnership involving eight East Valley law enforcement agencies that investigate critical incidents involving police officers.

The participating agencies include Apache Junction, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Paradise Valley, Queen Creek, Scottsdale, and Tempe police departments.

Meanwhile, the Mesa Police Department is conducting a separate investigation into the aggravated assault that occurred before the officer-involved shooting.

Authorities have not released the juvenile's age or announced any criminal charges in their initial news release.

Additional details, including what led to the confrontation and the circumstances surrounding the gunfire, remain part of the ongoing investigations.
