A second-alarm residential fire in Tempe Tuesday evening damaged two homes and claimed the life of one animal, prompting a large multi-agency response from departments across the Valley.

The fire was reported at approximately 6:21 p.m., with crews from Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Phoenix, and Scottsdale fire departments responding to the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire and dense smoke coming from one of the homes. Strong fire conditions quickly spread to a neighboring residence, threatening both structures and leading incident commanders to upgrade the response to a second alarm.
Due to the intensity of the fire and unsafe interior conditions, crews transitioned to a defensive firefighting strategy, attacking the blaze from the exterior while working to prevent further extension.
All residents of both homes were able to safely evacuate and were accounted for. However, one animal was found deceased inside one of the residences.
No civilian injuries were reported. Firefighters from multiple Valley agencies worked together to contain the blaze and protect surrounding properties.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire officials have not yet released damage estimates.
Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
